Dr. Abuelo obtained his veterinary and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and a master's in veterinary education from the Royal Veterinary College in the U.K. He is an assistant professor of cattle health and a dairy extension veterinarian at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. At MSU, Dr. Abuelo maintains federally funded research and extension programs, contributes to the clinical training of final-year veterinary students, and provides continuing education to veterinarians. His research focuses on the interplay between nutrition, metabolism, and immune function in dairy cows and calves. Dr. Abuelo is board certified in dairy practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, a diplomate of the European College of Bovine Health Management, and an associate diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Phil Arkow is the coordinator and co-founder of the National Link Coalition, a multi-disciplinary collaboration to increase awareness of species-spanning interconnectedness of violence. In addition to his role in establishing the coalition, he also co-founded the National Animal Control Association, the Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey, and the Colorado Federation of Animal Welfare Agencies. Phil also serves as a consultant for the ASPCA and chairs the Latham Foundation’s Animal Abuse and Family Violence Prevention Project. He is an international lecturer on interdisciplinary topics for animal shelters, child protection agencies, domestic violence programs, adult protective services, law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, and veterinarians, as well as teaching at Harcum College and the University of Florida.

Patricia Baley graduated from the University of Basel Biocenter with a Ph.D. in cell biology in 1990 and completed her DVM at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. She has been studying Chinese Veterinary Medicine for more than 20 years and began practicing TCVM exclusively in 2004.

After receiving his DVM from the University of Illinois, Dr. Brian Beasley spent several years at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, where he first completed a hospital internship prior to joining their equine podiatry service. Dr. Beasley achieved diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2021 and is currently a clinical assistant professor in equine sports medicine and podiatry at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Berliner is the Swanson Endowed Director of Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell University. There, she oversees the shelter medicine internship, trains students in classrooms and shelters, consults with shelters regarding best practices, conducts field clinics, and provides direct care to shelter animals. Dr. Berliner has served on the board of directors for the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and is currently a member of the task force responsible for revising the ASV’s Guidelines for Standard of Care in Animal Shelters.

Dr. David Biller is head of radiology at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. His major clinical interest is diagnostic ultrasound of small and large animals, and his research focuses on the use of diagnostic ultrasound in the diagnosis and evaluation of spontaneous animal diseases and the study of polycystic kidney disease in cats. A 1980 graduate of Auburn University, Dr. Biller completed a residency in radiology at The Ohio State University in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology since 1987, was the 2011 Western Veterinary Conference Small Animal Continuing Educator of the Year, and recipient of the 2013 Wilford Bailey Distinguished Alumni Award by the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University.

Mahmoud Boutaam is a digital strategist with Sprout Digital. After spending more than 10 years in world language teaching and corporate training, he melded his knowledge of marketing with his passion for education and now helps businesses get digital and profit digital. An avid "Yes Man" and father of three, Mahmoud resides in New Bremen, Ohio, with his wife Samantha.

Dr. Bowman holds DVM, master's, and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University, where he is an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. An expert in viral infectious diseases, veterinary public health, and epidemiology, Dr. Bowman oversees a research team that focuses on influenza and coronaviruses in key animal populations. He lead large applied field research projects investigating the epidemiology of influenza in swine populations, zoonotic influenza transmission across the animal-human interface, and the natural history of influenza in wild waterfowl. Some of his team’s most recent work studied SARS-CoV-2 in white-tailed deer. Before his current post in academia, Dr. Bowman was a practicing veterinarian focused on food animal production.

Dr. Jen Brandt is a licensed independent social worker, certified crisis worker, certified anti-oppression informed practitioner, and senior trainer for the Institute for Healthcare Communication. In 2000, Dr. Brandt co-founded The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Honoring the Bond services, one of the first U.S. programs aimed at recognizing and supporting the human-animal bond by providing education and resources to animal owners and animal care professionals. As the AVMA’s Director of Wellbeing, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiatives, Dr. Brandt helped launch the association’s Workplace Wellbeing Certificate Program, which supports veterinary professionals in developing the knowledge and skills needed to create healthy work systems; and the Brave Space Certificate Program, which explores the impact of stereotyping, unconscious bias, and workplace harassment.

In 2020, Dr. Brandt was elected as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice in Social Work. She received her Ph.D. and Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University and holds a bachelor's in social work and sociology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Indianapolis.

Dr. Christopher Byers is a board-certified veterinary emergency, critical care, and small animal internal medicine specialist and certified veterinary journalist based in Omaha, Neb. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University. Dr. Byers works as a teleconsultant in emergency/critical care and internal medicine for VetCT. He is the co-editor of the textbook Feline Emergency & Critical Care Medicine and has published chapters and articles in numerous publications. He also publishes a blog called CriticalCareDVM.com with the goals of educating pet owners and promoting the triad of care.

Dr. Courtney Campbell is a veterinary surgeon, media personality, and chief creative officer of Vet Candy. He graduated in 2005 from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine, after which he completed three internships and a residency training program. He became board certified in small animal surgery by the American College of Veterinary Surgery in 2019. Dr. Campbell has been recognized with the Lily Merit Award in veterinary school, the Best Clinical Presentation at the Veterinary Orthopedic Society Meeting, and most recently an Excellence in Journalism award at the Global Pet Expo. In addition to serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford and being a featured lecturer for Merck Animal Health, Dr. Campbell is also a frequent guest expert on programs such as The Doctors, Home and Family, The Real, Live with Kelly, and Rachel Ray. He is a co-host of Pet Talk, a national talk show on Nat Geo Wild; host of a pet parent education series on YouTube; and host of The Dr. Courtney Show podcast on Pet Life Radio.

Nicole Clausen has more than 14 years of experience in the veterinary industry, 10 of which she spent in small animal practice. She worked her way up from receptionist to operations manager in various clinics and understands the intricacies and internal workings of a successful practice. She is the founder and consultant at Veterinary Care Logistics, a consulting firm specializing in inventory management for veterinary professionals. Nicole has helped hundreds of veterinary practices from coast to coast create sustainable, lasting inventory management strategies. Dr. Marco da Silva was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and obtained his DVM from Sao Paulo State University in 1999. He then attended Colorado State University, where he studied the interactions between sperm, oocyte, and oviduct and worked as a clinician in the oocyte transfer program at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory. While at Colorado State, he earned his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in reproductive physiology and became a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists. From 2006 to 2009, Dr. da Silva was a faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, after which he joined the theriogenology and reproductive medicine service at The Ohio State University, where he has been developing a comprehensive assisted reproduction program. His research has focused on understanding several aspects controlling reproduction, with an emphasis on assisted reproductive techniques and contraception.

Dr. DiBartola received his DVM degree from UC Davis in 1976. He completed an internship at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1977 and a residency in small animal medicine at The Ohio State University in 1979. After this, he was assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine until 1981, when he returned to Ohio State and taught for 35 years. He currently is an emeritus professor of medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine. He received the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award in 1988 and the Zoetis Distinguished Teaching Award in 2014. His textbook "Fluid Therapy in Small Animal Practice" is in its fourth edition (2012). Dr. DiBartola has served as co-editor-in-chief for the "Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine" since 1997. His clinical areas of interest include diseases of the kidney and fluid, acid base, and electrolyte disturbances.

Dr. Sue Ettinger is a veterinary cancer specialist, international speaker, book author, and YouTube video blogger. She received her veterinary training at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, completed her residency in medical oncology at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, and is one of approximately 450 board-certified specialists in medical oncology in North America. Also known as Dr Sue Cancer Vet®, she most passionate about raising awareness of cancer in animals and developed the slogan, “See Something, Do Something, Why Wait? Aspirate.®”, to promote early cancer detection and diagnosis. Dr. Sue practices at Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, Conn.; is co-founder and chief medical officer of tele-consulting company Fidu; and was voted the 2019 Western Veterinary Conference Small Animal Continuing Educator of the Year.

Dr. Falck began her professional career as a marine biologist. After a two-year research project in the Red Sea, her interests evolved into a desire to work with animals in a clinical setting. In 1997, she received her veterinary doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Following a one-year internship in medicine and surgery at Friendship Hospital For Animals in Washington, D.C., she relocated to south Florida. While working a conventional practice, Dr. Falck was presented with a cat in end-stage kidney failure, which led her to alternative methods of healing. She became a certified veterinary acupuncturist in 2001, a traditional Chinese veterinary herbalist in 2003, and received her aromatherapy certification from the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy in 2017. Now residing in Georgia, Dr. Falck operates Petwise, a mobile veterinary practice emphasizing an integrative approach to animal wellness. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, hiking, cycling, practicing yoga, and playing guitar.

Dr. Tracy Farone is a professor of biology at Pennsylvania-based Grove City College. After receiving her DVM from The Ohio State University in 1999, she worked in private practice, academia, and research. In 2019, she was granted a sabbatical to pursue apicultural studies from a global perspective. Dr. Farone has worked with multiple experts in bee medicine and research, as well as dozens of beekeepers around the world. She maintains a research and teaching apiary, has developed a bee education website, presents at beekeeping club meetings, and provides bee medicine continuing education at veterinary conferences. Dr. Farone’s work has been featured in veterinary journals, including JAVMA, and she writes a monthly series, “BeeVet,” for Bee Culture Magazine.

Ed Fegan is the founder of Veterinary Business Professors, which provides courses and tools aimed at solving the unique challenges of managing a veterinary practice. His goal is to help practice managers and owners better run their practices and become more efficient, less stressed, and more profitable. Ed has managed veterinary practices for nearly 20 years and invested thousands of hours into building systems that make veterinary practices successful.

A certified public accountant, accredited business appraiser, and veterinarian, Dr. Felsted has spent the last 20 years working as a financial and operational consultant to veterinary practices and the animal health industry. She is active in multiple veterinary organizations, has written an extensive number of articles for a wide range of veterinary publications, and speaks regularly at national and international veterinary meetings. In 2011 and 2017, Dr. Felsted was awarded the Western Veterinary Conference Practice Management Continuing Educator of the Year and in 2014, the VetPartners Distinguished Life Member Award.

Dr. Feltes graduated from The Ohio State University in 2006 with her degree in veterinary medicine. Throughout her undergraduate schooling, master's program, and four years of vet school she always kept behavior in the forefront. As a student, she spent time with multiple veterinary behaviorists, honing her skills and developing the plan for The Behavior Clinic, which in 2007 opened as a mobile veterinary behavior service in Northeast Ohio. Today, the clinic is a 3,000-square-foot facility located in Olmsted Falls that services dog, cat, exotic pet, zoo, and equine patients. Dr. Feltes created a bite prevention program for the Olmsted Falls school system and won the 2018 R.K. Anderson Resident Research Award for her publication on aggression between housemate dogs. She gained her status as a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 2020. When not seeing patients, Dr. Feltes is an active soccer and pony club mom and enjoys sharing her passion for nature and all things animal with her family.

Dr. Marnin Forman graduated from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and completed an internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Following a residency in internal medicine at the University of California, Davis, he stayed on to complete a fellowship in nephrology. He received board certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2003. Dr. Forman is actively involved with academia and industry in the development of diagnostic tools for pancreatitis, and he has published manuscripts and book chapters evaluating the next generation of feline and canine pancreatitis testing. His clinical focus is rapid and minimally invasive diagnostic testing and therapeutics utilizing advanced lab work, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), endoscopy, and/or laparoscopy.

Dr. Garcia Guerra grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and developed his interest in cattle by helping in his nearby family farm. He obtained his veterinary degree (DVM) from Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 2009. While a veterinary student, he worked in a cattle embryo transfer and artificial insemination practice, which sparked his interest in cattle reproduction. In 2010, he moved to Canada to pursue a residency in ruminant field service at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, where he also obtained his M.Sc. degree in 2013. Following his passion for reproductive physiology, he earned a Ph.D. in endocrinology and reproductive physiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2017. Dr. Garcia Guerra’s research interests focus on investigating strategies that improve reproductive efficiency, primarily in beef cattle, and furthering our understanding on the causes and mechanisms involved in pregnancy loss in cattle. He is the recipient of the 2011 Pfizer Fellowship Award and is currently an assistant professor in The Ohio State University's Department of Animal Sciences.

Anna Garrett received her Bachelor of Science in agriculture from The Ohio State University in 2019, followed by her Master of Public Health with a specialization in Veterinary Public Health in 2021. Anna has worked as a veterinary assistant and receptionist in a small animal hospital since 2018. She also completed an internship with the American Red Cross’ Disaster Department, in which she surveyed county emergency management agencies and developed materials to help counties create a pet sheltering plans. She has assisted in the completion of Ohio’s African swine fever response plan, as well as taken part in tabletop exercises in preparation for zoonotic disease outbreaks. Her internship with Columbus Humane’s Cruelty Investigations Department kickstarted her interest in the link between animal cruelty and violence toward people.

Leeanne Garrett is a Public Health Entomologist at the Ohio Department of Health. She began her work in vector surveillance in 2015, and she is currently the coordinator for the mosquito and tick vector surveillance programs in Ohio. Leeanne earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Albion College in 2005, and she completed her master’s degree in Veterinary Public Health at the Ohio State University in 2019.

A Connecticut native, Dr. Rachael Gately works at Tufts Veterinary Field Service, where she is a clinical assistant professor and member of a 10-doctor team providing large animal clinical service while educating fourth-year veterinary students. Her daily activities at TVFS include dairy cattle herd work, small ruminant general practice, and all avenues of theriogenology. Dr. Gately earned her DVM from Texas A&M University in 2012, after which she completed an internship at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. For more than 25 years, she has raised nationally competitive breeding sheep, which is the root of her passion for small ruminant advanced reproductive techniques. Dr. Gately currently splits her small ruminant ART work between seed stock producers and researchers producing transgenic models to study human genetic neurologic diseases.

Dr. Gram is a clinical professor and dermatology service chief at the University of Florida. He received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with high honors from Auburn University. He completed an internship at the University of Illinois and a residency in dermatology at North Carolina State University. Prior to joining the team at the University of Florida, Dr. Gram was in private practice for 23 years, owning and operating four dermatology practices in Virginia and co-managing two 24-hour emergency and internal medicine hospitals. His experiences in private practice and academia inspired him to conceive and edit the book, “Chronic Disease Management for Small Animals.” He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally on practical approaches to pruritus and otitis. Dr. Gram enjoys clinical practice, teaching, and outdoor activities such as gardening and fishing.

Barden Greenfield is a board-certified veterinary dentist practicing in Memphis. He received his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and his DVM from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He became boarded in dentistry in 2011. Dr. Greenfield is a past president of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry, which is the educational and fundraising branch of veterinary dentistry. Dr. Greenfield’s passion for dentistry has led him to lecture on dental-related topics around the world. In 2016, he was the recipient of the prestigious AVDC Peter Emily Service Award.

Amy Habing earned her veterinary degree from The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. She then worked in a busy small animal practice in Maryland for three years before returning to academia. Dr. Habing completed a radiology residency at Michigan State University and received her board certification in diagnostic imaging in 2010. She was an assistant professor at Michigan State until 2013, when she moved with her family to Columbus, Ohio, and joined the faculty at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Currently, she is an OSU assistant professor teaching diagnostic imaging to veterinary students, interns, and residents. Dr. Habing also created and runs OSU’s mobile ultrasound service, which provides high-quality ultrasound to referring veterinarians in the Columbus area. She is married to Greg Habing, an epidemiologist at OSU. Together they have three daughters, a dog, and a cat.

Dr. Meghan Herron is the senior director of behavioral medicine education and outreach at Gigi’s, a shelter organization dedicated to improving the lives of shelter dogs. Prior to her current position, she spent over a decade as head of the behavioral medicine service at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. A seasoned international speaker on animal behavior, Dr. Herron is also the lead editor of the book “Decoding Your Cat,” the long-anticipated sequel to “Decoding Your Dog.” She is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and became board-certified as diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behavior after completing a residency at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Sharman Hoppes is a clinical associate professor in the zoological medicine service at Texas A & M University, which she joined in 2006. Dr. Hoppes earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University in 1993. She completed an avian medicine and surgery residency in 1999 at North Carolina State University and became a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in avian practice in 2000. She is a past president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and she is also an active member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians and the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians. Dr. Sharman's research interests include avian analgesia and proventricular dilatation disease in parrots. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, she cared for human patients as a registered nurse for 10 years.

Dr. James Howard is an assistant professor of soft tissue surgery at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. He earned his veterinary degree from Ohio State and completed a rotating medicine and surgery internship at the University of Tennessee. He then returned to Ohio State to complete a surgical residency and remained there for a clinical instructorship. His research interests include hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery, as well as endocrinopathies. Dr. Howard’s ongoing research includes minimally invasive diagnostic procedures, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and evaluative hepatobiliary sampling techniques.

Dr. Jurkovic graduated from Marietta College in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. In 2012, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology at Miami University, where she researched pathogenesis of Mycoplasma infections. She is a laboratory scientist in bacteriology at the Ohio Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Her interests include veterinary bacteriology, antimicrobial resistance, and public health.

Aminata Kalley is a second-year veterinary public health resident at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, she spent one year in large animal ambulatory practice in central Virginia. Dr. Kalley then transitioned to a position working for the Department of Homeland Security as a clinical veterinarian for research livestock housed at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. Her current residency work involves collaborating on projects with industry stakeholders, the USDA, and the Ohio Department of Agriculture to aid in developing state-level transboundary animal disease response plans and trainings.

Pam earned her associate degree in veterinary technology from Purdue University. For the past 20 years, she has worked in the ophthalmology department at Purdue University Veterinary Hospital, where she is the lead veterinary ophthalmology technician. Pam was on the organizing committee for the Academy of Veterinary Ophthalmology Technicians (AVOT) and has since been the secretary. She teaches both veterinary technician students and veterinary students in the classroom, laboratory, and on the clinical floor. The author of several published articles, Pam has also spoken at the Purdue Veterinary Fall Conference, the Veterinary Ophthalmic Technician Society annual meeting (now AVOT), and the Purdue Veterinary Technician Symposium.

Katrina Lafferty is one of less than 200 technicians worldwide to hold a veterinary technician specialty in anesthesia. After earning her veterinary technology degree in 2005, she became a senior technician at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in the Anesthesia and Pain Management Department. In 2016, Katrina moved to the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, where she is a lead technician in the Surgery and Anesthesia Department. In her current position, she is responsible for improving and innovating the anesthetic and analgesic care for the center’s non-human primate species. With a passion for anesthesia and pain management, particularly in exotic species, Katrina has had the privilege of working with a veritable menagerie of animals, ranging from a two-day-old calf to a 60-year-old tortoise. She has written written numerous articles and textbook chapter and presented at more than 40 continuing education seminars around the world.

Dr. Lashnits is a clinical assistant professor in small animal internal medicine at University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. She received her master’s in biology from Stanford University, DVM from Cornell University, and Ph.D. in comparative biomedical sciences from North Carolina State University. After completing an internship at a private practice in Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Lashnits spent several years in small animal GP/ER while simultaneously teaching high school chemistry. She later finished her internal medicine residency through the clinician investigator program at North Carolina State. Her broad research interests are in infectious disease epidemiology in a One Health context—particularly zoonotic and vector borne diseases—and infectious diseases that impact underserved veterinary populations. Her current studies include characterization of the flea microbiome and flea-borne diseases in free-roaming cats, as well as investigating Bartonella transmission and Babesia prevalence in the Midwest.

Shana Lemmenes has worked as a technician in both small animal and academia since 2011 and obtained a specialty in equine veterinary nursing in 2015. She is a senior veterinary technician at the University of Minnesota Large Animal Veterinary Medical Center, where she works mainly with surgery and lameness. Her greatest interests outside of large animal surgery are emergency medicine and hippotherapy. Shana has also co-edited a textbook for Elsevier: Mosby's Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians, 5th edition. She lives an hour south of the twin cities with her 9-year-old daughter and boyfriend. They have two dogs, a viszla cross named Daisy and a field springer named Mazie.

Dr. Joe Lozier received his DVM from The Ohio State University in 2014. He went on to complete an internship and residency in farm animal medicine and surgery at OSU. He received a master’s degree and completed a residency in 2018. Dr. Lozier is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, specializing in large animal, and is an assistant professor of farm animal medicine and surgery at The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Megan McCracken is a graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and a diplomate of the College of Veterinary Surgeons in large animal medicine. She completed internships at the University of Georgia and Chino Valley Equine Hospital, a fellowship at Oregon State University, and an equine surgery residency at the University of Missouri. Following her residency, Dr. McCracken spent several years as an associate surgeon at Rainland Farm Equine Hospital, a sport horse-focused private practice near Seattle. In 2016, she moved to the University of Tennessee, where she ran the large animal emergency and critical care service. Since 2019, Dr. McCracken has been an equine surgeon at the University of Missouri, where her focus is equine orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, as well as equine sports medicine. Her research interests include equine pain management and septic arthritis.

Dr. Timothy McDermott is an agriculture and natural resources educator at The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, where he has worked for the past six years. His outreach focuses on local food production systems and veterinary sciences. He also uses his veterinary expertise for OSU Extension work in backyard poultry, small ruminants, beef cattle, insect-vectored disease, and companion animal programming. Additionally, Dr. McDermott is a staff instructor for the Department of Veterinary Preventative Medicine at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, where he received his DVM in 1996. Prior to his current role, he spent 20 years in private practice veterinary medicine and surgery.

Dr. Messer worked with lowland gorillas and white Bengal tigers as a volunteer at the Cincinnati Zoo before graduating from The Ohio State University with a degree in animal nutrition in 1979, a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1984, and a master's in public health in 2016. He owned and operated a mixed-animal practice in southern Ohio for 18 years before accepting the position of public health veterinarian for the city of Columbus, Ohio, in 2002. His work deals primarily with zoonotic diseases and community animal complaints, such as nuisance and dangerous animals, stray and feral cats, animal insanitation, pet store complaints, and farm animal permits. During his tenure with the city of Columbus, he has achieved certification as a registered environmental health specialist and a licensed commercial pesticide applicator.

Anne Gemensky Metzler is a professor, ophthalmology service head, and chair of the Faculty Mentoring Committee at The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her DVM in 1995. She joined the faculty in 2000 after completing her residency, master’s degree, and board certification. Dr. Metzler has served as secretary of the faculty council, and she participated in both the Big Ten Alliance Academic Leadership Program and The OSU President and Provost’s Leadership Institute. She has been elected to the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, following service as chair of the ACVO Examination Committee. A passionate teacher, she received the Class of 2020 Excellence in Teaching Award and was recognized on the 2019 OSU CVM Teaching Honor Roll. Dr. Metzler’s clinical and research interests include treatment of equine glaucoma, canine corneal disease, and cataract surgery.

Dr. Eric Miller is a clinical associate professor of comparative ophthalmology at The Ohio State University. A second-generation veterinarian, he completed his veterinary degree at Mississippi State University. Following two rotating internships, three years in emergency practice, and a fellowship in internal medicine, Dr. Miller completed his residency in comparative ophthalmology at The Ohio State University and became a board-certified diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. A passionate instructor, Dr. Miller enjoys teaching ophthalmology to veterinary students, technicians, interns, and residents in his practice at the OSU Veterinary Medical Center, as well as through continuing education for veterinary professionals.

Dr. Laurie Millward is a 2006 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine (OSU CVM). She completed a combined clinical pathology residency and M.S. graduate program in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences at OSU in 2010. Dr. Millward is currently employed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) as senior director of veterinary services at the Cruelty Recovery Center. In this role, she coordinates and participates in the provision of animal rescue and veterinary care to animal victims of natural disasters and large-scale cruelty cases in the United States. Her previous jobs include work in private practice as a small animal and exotic animal general practitioner; nearly nine years as a professor in the Community Practice, Outreach, and Shelter Medicine Department at OSU CVM; and as chief veterinarian at Columbus Humane. Her areas of special interest are clinical pathology and shelter medicine.

Matt Morbitt is the vice president of organization and leadership development at MedVet, a position he has held since 2018. Prior to this, he spent four years as an organization development and change management consultant, eight years as director of talent and organization development at Worthington Industries, and 11 years as vice president of both associate development and HR at the BISYS Group. His certifications include Hogan Assessments, Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coach, Prosci Change Management and VitalSmarts Crucial Conversations & Influencing Change. Matt earned his MBA from the University of Dayton and his BSBA in organization development from Bowling Green State University.

Dr. Kevin Neves joined the faculty at Bowling Green State University in 2016 as an assistant teaching professor of marine biology. Previously, he served as production and operations manager for Acadia Harvest, a small sustainable fish farm in Franklin, Maine. He doubled majored at the University of Rhode Island, where he received a bachelor’s degree in marine biology, as well as aquaculture and fisheries technology. Dr. Neves then went on to Delaware State University to obtain a master’s in natural resource science, followed by a Ph.D. in marine biology from the University of Maine, where he investigated the effects of dissolved carbon dioxide on cataract formation in juvenile Atlantic cod. During his two decades of aquaculture research, he has worked with more than 20 different species of finfish, ranging from tilapia to Atlantic halibut to California yellowtail, as well as multiple invertebrate species, such as oysters, green sea urchins, and white-leg shrimp.

Dr. Newbold is a clinical faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She earned her DVM from the University of California, Davis, in 2014 and completed her comparative ophthalmology residency training at the University of Tennessee in 2018. Dr. Newbold’s areas of interest are cataracts, surgery of the lens, corneal disease, and feline ophthalmology.

Dr. Andy Niehaus is a professor and service head of farm animal surgery at The Ohio State University. He grew up in West Virginia on his family’s beef farm and earned a degree in chemical engineering from West Virginia University in 1999. After finishing undergrad, Dr. Niehaus enrolled in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, officially becoming a Buckeye. After graduating in 2003, he remained at OSU to complete an internship and residency in farm animal surgery, and he has remained at OSU as faculty since. A staunch mentor to future veterinarians, Dr. Niehaus is also the faculty advisor to the OSU chapters of the Food Animal Club, the pre-vet club, and Christian Veterinary Fellowship. He is a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. He and his wife, Laurie, have two children and live on a small farm northwest of Columbus.

Dr. Ormston earned a veterinary degree from Iowa State University, a Doctor of Veterinary Homeopathy from the British Institute of London, and an animal chiropractic certification from the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. A practitioner of a unique style of medicine, he developed homeopathic first aid kits complete with flip chart instructions for animal owners, a “ChyroRyde” saddle interface to correct saddle fit issues, and 3-D skeletal models to help students with anatomy. He has co-written over 100 articles for various publications, including booklets on nutritional myths in horses and dogs with Dr. Amy Hayek. In 2012, they opened the premier Animal Chiropractic Education Source, which trains both veterinarians and chiropractors on how to adjust animals and become certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. His new book is titled, “Yes, It's Really A Thing.”

Dr. Parker is a clinical professor at The Ohio State University. After earning her DVM from Tufts University, she completed a small animal internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, a small animal internal medicine residency at Iowa State University, and a nutrition residency at Tufts University. She is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. Dr. Parker’s primary areas of interest include kidney disease, gastrointestinal disease, and vitamin D metabolism, as well as nutritional management of a variety of canine and feline diseases.

Dr. Jess Pempek is an assistant professor at The Ohio State University in the Department of Animal Sciences, where her research centers around animal welfare. She holds a Ph.D. and master's in animal welfare and behavior, as well as a bachelor's in animal sciences, all from Ohio State.

Makenzie Peterson is the director for wellbeing at the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, where she works to foster a culture of wellbeing throughout academic veterinary medicine by promoting preventative systems-based initiatives. She provides subject-matter expertise on the science and application of evidence-based wellbeing practices, as well as the development and implementation of strategic organizational changes to improve overall community wellbeing. As Cornell CVM's first wellbeing program director, Ms. Peterson created community wellbeing initiatives for students, staff, and faculty and served on the New York State Veterinary Medical Society's Wellbeing Committee. She also now serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Veterinary Leadership Development Initiative. Ms. Peterson holds a master’s in health promotion and health education from the University of Utah, and she will obtain a doctorate of social work from the University of Southern California in 2022.

Jordan Porter earned an associate's degree in veterinary technology from the Veterinary Technician Institute at Bradford School in Columbus, Ohio, in 2008. Shortly after graduating, she moved to South Carolina, passed the VTNE, and spent seven years in general practice. Jordan began working for an internal medicine and intensive care practice in 2015 and obtained her veterinary technician specialist certification in small animal internal medicine in 2019. She is a co-host of the Internal Medicine For Vet Techs podcast. Her interests include hematological disorders, specialty nursing care, and client communication.

Dr. Quimby is an associate professor at The Ohio State University and is board certified in small animal internal medicine. Previous to her current position, she completed a Ph.D. studying feline chronic kidney disease and was faculty at Colorado State University. Dr. Quimby is a recipient of the International Renal Interest Society Award and the AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Research Award for her contributions to nephrology and feline medicine. Her current research areas include renal pathophysiology, novel treatment strategies, and feline clinical pharmacology focusing on improving supportive care and quality of life in cats with CKD.

A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Roger Redman has owned and managed three successful veterinary practices in Ohio. He has served under three different Ohio governors as appointee to the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board, of which he is a past president. Dr. Redman is the president and director of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards, where he oversees the VTNE Technician exam, RACE continuing education program, and PAVE entrance for foreign graduates to become licensed in the US.. He is a shareholder and medical consultant to Airvet Telemedicine in Los Angeles. As partnership development specialist at Encore Vet Group, Dr. Redman interacts with practice sellers of all levels of practice ownership, from two-doctor GPs to 66-doctor specialty and ER centers, to create successful transition strategies.

A 2001 graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Kimberly Riker is a partner at Shoreland Animal Hospital in Toledo and a member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board. She also serves on the American Association of Veterinary State Boards Finance Committee and was chair of nominations in 2018. Dr. Riker-Brown has a special interest in small animal oncology.

Dr. Robertson graduated from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and completed a graduate certificate in shelter medicine at the University of Florida. Board certified in both anesthesia and animal welfare in the United States and Europe, she holds a certificate in small animal acupuncture and has published widely on the recognition and alleviation of acute pain in animals. Dr. Robertson currently serves as the senior medical director of Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice, a large network of veterinarians dedicated to end-of-life care and in-home euthanasia. She is also a courtesy professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Florida, where she teaches anesthesia and analgesia to residents, nurses, and technicians. Dr. Robertson also volunteers for community cat clinics and organizations that provide veterinary care to under-resourced communities.

Heather has been in the veterinary field for 25 years, having held nearly every position found at a veterinary practice, including regional multi-unit director and private hospital management consultant. She holds a master’s degree in human resources, is dual certified in human resources through the HR Certification Institute and Society for Human Resource Management, and is currently working towards her juris doctorate. Throughout her career, Heather has found that a practice’s culture, leadership, and training are cornerstones to retaining team members and creating a client experience that cultivates loyalty. Her goal is to help the veterinary field elevate its employee relations to draw the best long-term talent possible.

Dr. Rudinsky is an associate professor in the small animal internal medicine service at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, where he works as a staff internist and research scientist. He earned his veterinary degree from Ohio State and completed a small animal rotating internship at Purdue University, followed by a combined residency in internal medicine and master's degree at Ohio State. After residency training, he completed two post-doctoral research fellowships in mucosal immunology at Ohio State and microbial pathogenesis at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. A member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Dr. Rudinsky’s current clinical and research interests include gastrointestinal endocrinology, chronic enteropathies, pancreatic and hepatic disease, mucosal immunology, and the intestinal microbiome as it relates to disease pathophysiology and treatment.

Dr. Erin Runcan is an associate clinical professor in theriogenology and reproductive medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she has held a faculty position since 2014. She has a special interest in clinical theriogenology in all species and has authored several peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and continuing education lectures.

Dr. Domenico Santoro is an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Florida and is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists and both the American and European colleges of veterinary dermatology. He holds a DVM from the University of Naples and earned both a master’s in veterinary medical sciences and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign. He was voted the Elective Small Animal Clinician of the Year by the UF Class of 2021 and received the Brasley Fellowship Award from the University of Illinois. His research interests include clinical microbiology, environmental allergies, host-pathogen interaction, and innate immunity.

Alison Shockley is an environmental Supervisor at the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, where she supervises technical assistance units for infectious waste management, composting, waste to energy facilities, and beneficial use. She holds a bachelor's degree in microbiology from The Ohio State University.

Carlo Siracusa obtained his DVM from the University of Messina, Italy, and his Ph.D. from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, defending a thesis on perioperative stress in dogs and the effect of pheromone therapy. He completed a residency in animal behavior at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, where he is currently an associate professor of clinical animal behavior and welfare, as well as the director of the animal behavior service. Dr. Siracusa is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists, of which he serves as president, and by the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavior Medicine. His research interests focus on canine stress evaluation and control; canine and feline temperament evaluation; prognostic factors and treatment outcome of behavior problems; and behavior and cognitive changes in dogs with medical disease.

Dr. Skorupski is a native Ohioan and completed her B.S., DVM, and graduate-level epidemiology coursework at The Ohio State University. She also completed a master’s degree in animal science in reproductive physiology at Cornell University. Early in her veterinary career, she worked in a mixed animal practice with dairy emphasis in Holmes County, Ohio, and as veterinary medical officer for the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service in red meat plants in northwest Ohio. With APHIS Veterinary Services, Dr. Skorupski has held positions as field veterinarian, epidemiology officer, and assistant area veterinarian in charge in Ohio, West Virginia, and Indiana. She is now the assistant director and is responsible for surveillance, preparedness, and response activities in Ohio.

Dr. Amanda Smith completed an MPH in veterinary public health and a Ph.D. in comparative and veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University. The focus of her Ph.D. dissertation was the epidemiology of canine leptospirosis in the United States. Dr. Smith is currently an epidemiologist at the Baltimore City Health Department and Johns Hopkins University.

A 30-year veteran of the animal care field, Wouter Stellaard’s passion is to teach people how to train animals using the science of behavior change. His career began in the Netherlands while working in a wildlife rehabilitation center, where he created his own animal ambulance. After moving to the U.S., he graduated from the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program at Moorpark College and was later hired at Natural Encounters Inc. As the director of behavioral programs, he worked with zookeepers around the world to create animal training programs. Wouter then joined the team at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium as the animal programs training director. He was responsible for the training of both staff and animals and oversaw natural behavior mixed-species shows and immersive animal encounters guest area. Wouter is currently the owner of Behavior 360, where he focuses on educating animal trainers while setting up department and zoo-wide training programs and guest experiences.

Since 2017, Maura Stevenson has served as the chief human resources officer at MedVet, where she oversees all aspects of the employee experience. Previously, Maura served as vice president of talent management at The Wendy’s Company and as vice president of human resources at Starbucks. During her nine-year tenure with Starbucks, Maura led H.R. for multiple global functions and also held several positions focused on leading organizational development. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, as well as a master’s and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Dr. Summers was born and raised in Muskingum County, Ohio, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University (OSU). Upon graduating, he spent nearly nine years as a private large animal practitioner in Vermont, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In 2014, he joined the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), where he has since worked as a field veterinarian, assistant state veterinarian, and acting chief of the Division of Meat Inspection. In 2021, Dr. Summers also took on the role of interim state veterinarian. In addition, he is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and a captain in the United States Army Reserve Veterinary Corp. Outside of work, Dr. Summers is active in his church and enjoys exercising, hiking, camping, swimming, and boating with his wife, Angela, and their three children.

Dr. Jane Sykes is a ACVIM board-certified diplomate and professor of small animal medicine at the University of California, Davis, where she has been on faculty since 2002. She obtained her veterinary and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Melbourne in Australia, completed her residency at the University of Minnesota, and earned an MBA from the University of Georgia. Dr. Sykes has coauthored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, is the editor of the Elsevier textbook “Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases” and Greene’s “Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat.” She co-founded and was the first president of the International Society of Companion Animal Infectious Diseases (ISCAID) and currently serves as its secretary and treasurer, and she is also the president elect of the ACVIM. Her research interests currently include antimicrobial drug resistant bacterial infections, blood-borne infectious diseases, and deep mycoses.

Stephanie Valberg is an internationally known expert on neuromuscular disease in horses. Her research has focused on the genetic and environmental basis for muscle disease in horses, optimal methods for their diagnosis, and development of targeted treatment. She has received numerous awards for her work, including induction into the Equine Research Hall of Fame and giving the Milne Lecture at the American Association of Equine Practitioners Convention.

Dr. Alina Vale attended veterinary school at the University of California, Davis and earned a master’s degree in veterinary forensic medicine from the University of Florida. As an official veterinarian with the California Horse Racing Board, she investigates equine fatalities and conducts post-mortem examination reviews. A passionate proponent of the humane use of horses, Dr. Vale chairs the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Welfare & Public Policy Advisory Council and previously chaired the Equine Abuse & Neglect Subcommittee.

Dr. Grace VanHoy is a clinical instructor in the farm animal medicine and surgery service at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, as well as an assistant professor with the veterinary preventative medicine department in the parasitology section at the College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her bachelor’s degree in animal sciences from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and her DVM degree from Ohio State, where she also completed an internship and residency in the farm animal medicine and surgery service. During her residency, Dr. VanHoy also completed a master's degree with an emphasis in veterinary parasitology, and she is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Dr. Walker is a 1992 graduate of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After two years in private practice as a dairy practitioner, she completed a food animal medicine and surgery residency and earned her Master of Science degree at the University of Illinois. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, specializing in large animals. Dr. Walker taught senior veterinary students at University of Illinois, Washington State University, Michigan State University, and The Ohio State University. She was the full-time veterinarian for 10 years at a large Ohio alpaca farm and has recently finished two chapters for the next Dr. Fowler’s Camelid Medicine and Surgery book. She is frequently invited to speak at owner and veterinary conferences, both in the U.S. and internationally, and was on the board of directors for the International Camelid Institute. Dr. Walker practices in Grove City, Ohio, at her clinic, Camelid Care Veterinary Services.

Abby Welsh is a veterinary public health professional who is passionate about zoonotic disease prevention. She started her academic career in The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium’s “Zoo School” program, presenting research on captive Mexican wolf exhibit use. Her education continued at The University of Findlay, where she conducted cancer research and graduated in 2018 with a bachelor’s in animal science and biology. Abby was elected as cohort representative of her graduate class at The Ohio State University, where she completed her culminating project on rabies vaccination regulations in Ohio. Shortly thereafter, she received her Master of Public Health degree, with a specialization in Veterinary Public Health. Her professional accomplishments include working for Preservation Parks of Delaware County as a seasonal naturalist, the Ohio Department of Health as a zoonotic diseases intern, and The Ohio State University as a research assistant in an antimicrobial resistance research lab.

Leslie has been a credentialed veterinary technician for more than 30 years. After graduating from the veterinary technology program at the State University of New York at Delhi in 1989, she joined the team t the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Leslie enjoys the unpredictable nature of emergency and critical care work and the diverse caseload it provides, as well as teaching veterinary and technician students in the clinical and laboratory settings. A passionate advocate for the veterinary technician profession, Leslie is involved with her state technician association and NAVTA, sits on the advisory board of the Veterinary Nurse Initiative, and serves as a board member at large for the Academy of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Technicians and Nurses. She also serves as the vice chair of the Tennessee State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Leslie is a RECOVER CPR-certified instructor and also holds a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s in management and leadership.

Dr. Sara White is a 1998 graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She has worked in shelter medicine, including high-quality high-volume spay/neuter, throughout most of her career. Since 2006, Dr. White has operated Spay ASAP Inc., a nonprofit MASH-style mobile spay/neuter clinic that has treated more than 58,000 animals in Vermont and New Hampshire. While working in spay-neuter, she developed an interest in ergonomics, health, wellbeing, and injury in veterinarians and staff, and in spring 2015, she completed a Master of Science in health ergonomics from the University of Derby in the U.K. In 2018, Dr. White was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. She is a co-author of both the 2008 and 2016 ASV Spay Neuter Guidelines and the editor of the recently published textbook, “High-Quality, High-Volume Spay and Neuter and Other Shelter Surgeries.”

Megan Williams started her career in the veterinary profession over 25 years ago as a weekend kennel technician. During her early career, she held many positions, including veterinary assistant, shelter manager, and office manager. Eleven years ago during a transformational period, she made the move to MedVet, which led her on a journey of returning to college, obtaining her degree in human resources, and supporting the veterinary profession in a new and exciting way. Along this journey, she obtained her certification in employee group benefits and became a certified compassion fatigue professional. Most recently, Megan received her certification through the QPR Institute as an online counseling and suicide intervention specialist. She uses her education and experiences to support others as they navigate the mental health challenges associated with working in the veterinary profession.

Dr. Jenessa Winston is an assistant professor at The Ohio State University. She received a Bachelor of Science in integrated biology from the University of Florida in 2007 and a veterinary degree from North Carolina State University in 2011. She went on to complete a rotating small animal internship and residency training in small animal internal medicine at North Carolina State, achieving board certification as a diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2015. As a clinical investigator and NIH T32 fellow at NC State, Dr. Winston completed a Ph.D. in comparative biomedical sciences with an infectious disease concentration in 2019. As a clinician scientist, Dr. Winston’s primary areas of interest include microbe-host interactions during health and disease, as well as rational manipulation of microbial ecosystems, including fecal microbiota transplantation.

Dr. Page Yaxley is an associate professor in small animal emergency and critical care medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During her residency at Michigan State University (MSU), she became interested in medical ethics, quality of life, and end-of-life care, in addition to critical care medicine. In 2011, she founded Veterinary Hospice Care at MSU, the country’s second academic veterinary end-of-life service. Since moving back to Ohio, her research interests evolved to include transfusion medicine and trauma. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, Dr. Yaxley serves as the co-director of OSU’s Veterinary Committee on Trauma and the intern program director. She belongs to many professional organizations, including the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care, and she is the founder and co-president of the Veterinary Society for Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Yaxley has been the recipient of many teaching awards, most notably the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award, and the John Lyman Jr. Award for Clinical Teaching.

With more than 21 years of experience, Julie Young is a forward-thinking, personable, and practical attorney with JMY Law, LLC, a boutique firm in Central Ohio working exclusively on employment and HR law. She focuses on proactive avoidance of HR-related legal problems by providing practical guidance in nearly every aspect of employment relationships. Julie is a graduate of Miami University and The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. A frequent speaker on a variety of HR law topics, Julie was the recipient of Columbus CEO's 2015 Top Lawyer for Employment and Labor, and she was recently nominated as a 2021 Super Lawyer.

Sheri Zapadka earned her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of Toledo, and her PharmD degree from the University of Florida.
