Feb. 22–25, 2018 | Greater Columbus Convention Center | Columbus, Ohio

One of the philosophies of the OVMA is the importance of lifelong learning—and the MVC is a great place to learn! At the MVC, you'll be able to take your learning outside the classroom and get a glimpse of your future profession, no matter the stage of your academic career.

Student Events

OVMA Student Member Appreciation Reception

OVMA Student Members are invited to the annual Student Appreciation Reception, where they can kick back with fellow students, get to know the OVMA staff, network with future colleagues—and even win raffle prizes! This year’s event will feature keynote speaker Dr. Tony Bartels, a nationally recognized expert on student loans.

Special thanks to Silver Sponsor VCA Animal Hospitals for its support of this event.

About the Speaker

Dr. Bartels (CSU‘12) and his wife together have more than $400,000 in veterinary school debt that they manage using federal income-driven repayment plans. By necessity, his professional activities include researching and speaking on veterinary-student debt, providing guidance to colleagues on loan-repayment strategies, and contributing to VIN Foundation initiatives, such as co-developing the Student Loan Repayment Simulator. His other professional interests include small- and exotic-animal practice.

How do you find a mentor or a summer externship? Connection Corner is your chance to ask questions you might not be able to get answered in a classroom. During this speed networking event, you’ll be able to talk with practicing veterinarians in a variety of disciplines, narrow down your field of focus, get advice to help you on your path to becoming a veterinarian, and begin creating a network of colleagues. Veterinary Exploration Conference, Parents’ Workshop, & College Fair

The Veterinary Exploration Conference, held in conjunction with the MVC, is an opportunity for students to get a glimpse of everything the veterinary medical field has to offer and what it takes to get there. Parents are also invited to a special workshop to learn about the college application and financing process. Attendees will enjoy lunch while listening to an entertaining and enlightening presentation from a member of the veterinary community. At the conclusion of the conference, attendees are invited to a college fair, where representatives from several veterinary and technician schools will be available to answer questions about admissions criteria, how to finance a veterinary education, and more.

Volunteer Opportunities

Would you like to be more involved in the Midwest Veterinary Conference? Are you looking for an opportunity to connect with experts in your field and maybe even meet with speakers one-on-one? If so, becoming a Session Moderator is the perfect way to take your Conference experience to the next level!

What is a Session Moderator?

A Session Moderator serves as an ambassador to a Speaker and introduces him or her before the session. (Don’t worry, we will prepare a short speech for you!)

Moderators ensure the session run smoothly by troubleshooting any issues so the Speaker can continue his or her presentation. In the event of a problem, the Moderator will locate appropriate staff to resolve A/V equipment or room issues.

What do I get for volunteering as a Moderator?
  • Free registration! OVMA and SCNAVTA members and students who volunteer 3+ hours can attend the MVC for free.
  • Complimentary lunch! Moderators have access to the Speaker Dining Room on the day(s) they preside.
  • Complimentary parking! The OVMA validates parking for Moderators on the day(s) they volunteer.
  • Networking opportunities! Meet and greet with experts in your future profession from Ohio as well as on a national level.
  • Education! You'll be able to sit in on the sessions you're presiding over.
  • Chance to Win! Each volunteer will automatically be entered into a drawing to win one of two Columbus sports packages, compliments of Bronze Sponsor Experience Columbus.
